The End of the American Experiment
65
Over two hundred years ago, our founding Fathers had a dream, a dream thousands would fight for, and thousands would die for. They dreamed that one day every American would be free to make their own decisions, unfettered by an onerous, distant government.
They dreamed that every American would be personally responsible for their own welfare, free to make the thousands of little decisions that ultimately chart the course of their own lives. They carefully crafted an instruction manual on how to conserve the dream, signed by fifty-two of them. The US Constitution.
And today, that dream is dying.
You see, the dream of “personal freedom” is the same dream as “personal responsibility”, and those who are opposed to this dream have seized upon this second aspect. Those who despise this dream, those who crave power and dominion over others (seeking to remove their “personal freedoms”), have realized this dual aspect of the dream, and they prey upon a longstanding aspect of human nature:
People often seek out the path of least resistance.
Once, in its rawest form, this dream was for man to reap the benefits of his hard work and imagination, enabling him to build himself up into whatever he could conceive. And on the other hand, this dream could descend into a mans struggle to survive, his struggle to feed and clothe himself, to tend to his health, and his families. So every man could make his choices, and see the results. Learning from his mistakes, and capitalizing on his successes, America had millions of self-empowered entrepreneurs – all directly receiving maximum feedback on their efforts. Many would argue this direct feedback, often in the form of “improved crop yields”, or “furniture that people want”, was the most powerful agent of progress in early America. They’d also argue that it was not only beneficial for an early America, it was essential for its efficient colonization and growth. Ideas that worked prospered. Ideas that didn’t, withered. These were the days of “necessity is the mother of invention”.
And it is the struggling part of the dream that has come under fierce attack. You see, people who are struggling are still people. And so those whose ideas and efforts are out of step with society as a whole begin to fail, they begin to seek solutions. At first they seek solutions to achieve success. Failing that, they seek solutions to survive. And this is the point of attack against the dream.
And it is at this exact point they have erected giant monoliths – edifices so gargantuan they were beyond the conception of the founders. Politically impregnable, yet economically unsustainable, these goliaths are poised to collapse. And when they fall the destruction of the American Dream is likely to be utter and complete – no part of it is likely to remain.
What are these monoliths? Social Security. Medicare. Medicaid. Welfare.
Fundamentally these programs are the antithesis to the American Dream – they provide an alternate path of least resistance when a mans efforts are not successful. Instead of picking yourself up and dusting yourself off and trying to forge ahead again… people seek out the path of least resistance – which is now provided by these monoliths.
The Mother of Invention (necessity) is being killed off by the path of least resistance – and so is the American Dream.
And as more millions and millions of Americans choose the ever more accessible path of least resistance provided by these monoliths and the edifices become so large that the productive and successful cannot sustain them anymore, the monoliths shall fall.
As they come crashing down, those who have conceived them, those who have insisted that they were necessary and beneficial and good will quickly declare that the dream was a lie.
And then they will have what they always wanted, dominion over your freedom and dreams.

I have been thinking about the same, but I did not know how to say it. You did very well.
Let the government take care of me and I will sit around with my finger up my nose.
Keep on hubbing!

I hope to God you are wrong. I see where we are going and your hub speaks the truth. I just have to believe right now that the good outnumbers the bad. I suppose the voting polls will tell us that. Thank you for taking the time to write this very well-written piece from the heart. I'm gonna have to push the "follow" button.
